After a regular season loss (2-5) to the Blackman Blaze, the girls entered the District 7 Large title match with something to prove. The Tigers’ team was decimated with injuries at key positions (#2, #3, and #6) for the entire season… and 8th and 9th graders have really stepped up to the plate to lead the Tigers to their 9-4 season. Quite an accomplishment, really.
Entering Tuesday’s match, Junior Macy Speight hadn’t played any singles matches since January. With her shoulder injury in recovery mode, she was put on the post season roster at #4 singles and in #2 doubles with her sister, Molly… despite Macy’s need to underhand serve.
The outcome of this match was uncertain… but the Tigers showed determination and some incredible singles play to bring the score, after singles, to 3-2! Both doubles went on, but CMS only needed 1 of those doubles teams to win to secure their second consecutive District 7 title.
Macy Speight and Molly Speight clinched the championship with an 8-4 win over the Blaze! Ironically, Macy and Molly also clinched the 2018 championship over Blackman with a tiebreaker win at #1 doubles.
The Tigers are the District 7 Champions! And move on to Regional team action next week. Up next are the Individual events which start on Wednesday at the ATC.
